Those statistics are seriously frightening, particularly those that are alcohol related. I still think that the stigma attached to drunk driving in northern European countries is far greater than in Spain. Drunk drivers in England, for example, tend to be socially ostracised and this tends to be a pretty big factor in stopping people.

I think think accidents would decrease substantially on the roads here if more drivers observed the proper and safe breaking distances between cars.

    Thanks for your comment, Zagaleta.

You’re completely right, drunk driving in Southern Spain appears to be (unfortunately) socially acceptable and even verging on fashionable, cool and fearless.

In fact, just the other day I was talking to a guy I know and he said that he used to drink and drive – but he had recently stopped. Which might seem like a good thing…However, far from his cessation being anything to do with safety of himself and others, the only thing that he was bothered about were the points that were taken off his license when he got caught.

If, in addition to your suggestion about recognising correct breaking distances – people actually socially ostracised drunk drivers here, I believe the roads would be a much safer place to be.
