Today, Friday 25th of November, the biggest Apple Store in Spain in the shopping center La Cañada is finally open. The Apple Store Marbella opened with some long queues and the store was busy during the whole day. They were expecting 4.000 – 5.000 people on the first day. The Apple Store opened exactly on black friday, which is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. That’s why the Apple Store had many good offers and probably sold quite a lot on their first day. If you hurry up you can still get some good offers until the day ends at 10pm.

Inditex stores launch e-commerce platforms

Industria de Diseño Textil, S.A. (“Textile Design Industries”) or more commonly known as Inditex, is a large Spanish corporation and world’s largest fashion group. The founder and current chairman of Inditex is Amancio Ortega, Spain’s richest man and the world’s 7th richest man. Inditex runs more than 5,000 stores worldwide and owns brands like Zara, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Oysho, Pull and Bear, Stradivarius, Zara Home, Tempe and Uterqüe. Since September 6th all Inditex chain stores will be online. This means a further 15 countries in Europe will be able to purchase from the largest clothing chain in Spain. Deliveries will be available not only in Spain but also in the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Holland, Italy, Ireland, Norway, Poland, and Portugal.

The launch of their online platforms also marks the start-up of business operations for a number of these concepts in some of these countries. And so Pull&Bear, Stradivarius, Oysho and Uterqüe will make their market debuts in Germany. The latter chain will also enter the French, Swiss and British markets for the first time, alongside Oysho in the case of the UK. Massimo Dutti, meanwhile, which is set to launch online sales in a total of 13 markets, will make its first foray into Austria, Denmark and Monaco.

January Sales come early

The winter sales period does not officially start in Southern Spain until January 7th, but with times being as hard as they are, shops have decided to bring forward and extend this scheduled event.

While local traders are not actually allowed to use the term “rebajas” until January, many shop windows are covered with signs announcing “special” offers or 50% discount.

I always used to panic around January sales time because I never had any money left over from the finance drain that is Christmas for new things, so I for one think this is a fabulous idea. I still have quite a few Christmas presents to buy – and of course, everyone loves a bargain!

Save 1,300 euros a year – shopping

Hard to believe? Read on.

Nope, this isn’t a clever marketing ploy involving coupons or “advantage” points to get you to consume more – it’s actually true.

Well, that’s according to a recent study carried out in June this year by the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) The study showed that shoppers buying usual household goods and foods can save more than 1,300 euros a year, just by changing their shopping outlet. However, that’s not all – in some major cities the possible savings are even greater (such as in Madrid) where the price gap between the cheapest and most expensive stores is so wide and quite shocking that shoppers in these areas could pay 3,200 euros less by buying at the bargain outlets!

The shopping study compared a total of 971 supermarkets in 53 cities, and compared the prices for two different types of purchases. The study entailed a “secret shopper” frequenting each of these supermarkets and using two shopping carts. One shopping cart was filled with name-brand food and toiletries, and another was filled with cheaper options such as “white brand”, store labels or other bargain brands.

The study’s results were quite revealing. For name-brand products the cheapest store on average nationwide was Alcampo, although in some cities regional stores came out quite a bit cheaper, such as in Granada and Jaén, where Supermercados “Dani” were the least expensive. Following on from Alcampo, at about eight per cent more expensive, were Carrefour, Día and Mercadona.

The most expensive national chain was – you guessed it – El Corte Inglés, with nearly 25 per cent higher prices than economical leader Alcampo.

For bargain-brand items, Lidl was definitely the most economical followed by Alcampo, Carrefour and Aldi. And again, as with the name-brand products, El Corte Inglés topped the charts being the most expensive of the national chains. Phew!

Well, with the financial crisis still alive and kicking in Spain, I know where I definitely won’t be shopping…!

Marks and Spencer opened in La Cañada

Marks & Spencer (M&S) is a major British retailer with over 885 stores in more than 40 countries around the world. But there was none in Spain. The company had stores in Spain before, in Madrid and Sevilla, but closed it eight years ago. But with Marbella as a city with many english people living here they want to try it again now and will use the new store in La Cañada Shopping Centre as a pilot for further expansion. The new store in Marbella is being established on a franchise basis by the same company which has been in Gibraltar since 1968, which is York Marbella SL. The new shop is on the second floor store in La Cañada, next to Benetton.

Making excellent use of the space, the 1.300 square metre shop squeezes in a good selection of clothing, the ever popular lingerie, home wear, gifts and children’s wear. Attracting more than its fair share of interest was the food store, which although small, is packed full of delicious British goodies including much of the ambient food range, including teas, biscuits, crumpets, chocolate, competitively priced wines, and a superb selection of frozen goodies, among them many mouthwatering Indian, Chinese and Italian dishes. About three million euros have been invested in the new Marbella store which will employ between 50 and 70 people according to the time of the year.
